Braveheart’s Saga—Part IV

Many of you have asked for updates on the status of Braveheart, aka Baby Romee, so I decided to post another blog, which is also my way of thanking you for all the love and support, the care and concern, and the prayers you have given to me and my family.

Braveheart, now 5 months old, is thriving, growing fast, full of curiosity, frequent smiles, and has a great sense of humor! She sees the cardiologist in Reno every 3 weeks for a checkup and an echocardiogram which is an ultrasound of the heart. In a recent visit, the echocardiogram showed some signs of blockage of the pulmonary artery that was constructed from cadaver tissue shortly after birth. At some point in the near future, this problem needs to be addressed, which usually means a second  open heart surgery, to our dismay. But, the cardiologist said that it might be possible to replace that vessel by catheterization which would be a big relief because it would mean a quick recovery. Danni and Barrett intend to bring Romee back to the Stanford Children’s Hospital soon in order for Romee to be evaluated and a decision made about her treatment.

I hope you enjoy the photos of my recent visit. There were around 100 photos to choose from, making it difficult to decide which to choose. I didn’t want to overwhelm you with too much to look at.

Baby Romee is fast asleep in the arms of a large, white-haired man in a red suit with white gloves.

The four white-clad angels—Gramma Denise in the middle holding Baby Romee, Aunt Nikki on the left, and Momma Danni on the right. Behind them is a gigantic Christmas tree, felled in the forest in an area that required a permit.

“Christmas is so much fun!”

Romee found the ornaments on the tree fascinating.

My neighbor’s daughter parted with her 23 inch penguin to give to Romee. The penguin’s mother is 36 inches tall, but remained at home, waiting to be reunited with her daughter when Romee comes to Santa Fe to visit her Gramma Rikki.

Romee is not too sure about this creature that just stands and stares. She keeps her eye on what looks like a long, pointed nose.

The two blissful grandmothers

I never imagined the immense joy I would feel around my grandchild.

“Yay!! We get to go outside.”

We’re all set to go on our walk around the beautiful Truckee area.

The Truckee River is right below Barrett and Danni’s house, a short walk away. It flows from nearby Lake Tahoe. The area is stunning, with towering mountains in all directions and lakes dotting the landscape. One afternoon we took the gondola up to the top of one of the ski areas and soaked in the magnificent views that surrounded us.

Nearby Lake Donner during a snowy winter last year.

The town of Truckee looks like it’s from another century, quaint and charming.

It’s easy to forget that one is in the 21st century.

Mainstreet

Momma and baby in twin outfits.

“Time to go on another trip somewhere. I can’t wait!”

We went bowling one afternoon. Romee wore headphones to keep out the loud noises in the bowling ally.

“What bliss!”

“I’m all clean now.”

Michael and Denise, adoring grandparents and sterling human beings—friends for life. I feel so fortunate.

Pure love

“Bye guys! I’m off to get some sun. Thanks for all your care and concern. It makes a big difference in my life. See you next time around.”

Your prayers are always welcomed and very much appreciated. I am certain that those prayers are making a difference.

Sending love and many blessings to all of you,

Erica/Gramma Rikki

  1. Hi Erica, I just finished reading your second memoir, From Mountains to Medicine. Well written and very exciting! I wonder if you have incorporated any of your uncle’s treatments (fasting, raw foods) into your medical practice or life. Hope to see you soon so I can ask this in person.

    • Yes, I certainly have. Uncle Ernst has been a huge inspiration in my life. I don’t recommend prolonged fasting anymore because too many toxins release at once and can make people feel really sick. Our world is way more toxic than is was over 50 years ago when I did the 15 day fast. I’m so glad you enjoyed the book, Mary Ray!! Love and hugs, Erica

  2. You always take us along on your adventures across the globe and weave a wonderful story. The joyous journey of being a grandmother is truly an amazing adventure. Christmas with the grandbaby is pure joy!

    • You know the feeling, Perri. How many grandchildren do you have? I think of you often and admire how you cope with all your challenges. Much love, Erica

  3. How thrilling to read your update and savor each and every photo. Each one of you radiates luminosity. How very precious to be part of her story and your story with each entry. Prayers abound from so many who send love to you all. Looking forward to being with you again next year! Love, Laura

      • I just have been in Japan walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. However, the hiking was only part of my trip, a lot of cultural visits – also interesting. The next hiking might be in the Austrian Alps or walking the St. Michaels’ pilgrimage path in southern italy….I let the spirit guide me…. Much love to you, dear Erica!

  5. Thank you for sharing your joyous Christmas. The bond of love is palpable.

    • Yes, I have noticed the same expressions in Romee–sometimes simply cute and other times mature and profound. She is an amazing spirit. But, maybe all grandmothers feel this way about their grandchildren. Much love and many blessings, dear Baksim.
