Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert—My Memoir

Dear Loyal Readers,

Thank you for all your support and encouragement in getting this story into the light of day. For nearly a half-century I have wanted to tell the story about my life on the Navajo Reservation. What happened to me was so out of the ordinary, I felt compelled to tell the world about those experiences that profoundly changed the course of my life. But life kept me busy, especially once I became a medical doctor. Although friends and family urged me for years to write a book about those times, it was only recently that I felt a calling I could not ignore.

——————————————————————————————————————

Synopsis of the book:

This memoir is the true story about the life of a young Anglo woman, Erica Elliott, who comes to the Navajo Reservation in 1971 as a newly minted schoolteacher, knowing nothing about her students or their culture. After several blunders and misunderstandings, and beset by loneliness and despair, Erica makes a determined effort to overcome the barriers of language and culture. From the moment she begins learning the Navajo language, the people open their hearts and homes to her, inviting her into a world that will profoundly impact the rest of her life.

Erica falls in love with her Navajo students—along with their enchanting land, healing ceremonies, and rich traditions. She witnesses many miracles during this time, and experiences her own miracle when the elders pray for her healing. She survives fearsome encounters with a mountain lion and a shapeshifting “skin walker.” She learns how to herd and butcher sheep, make fry bread, weave traditional rugs, and more.

Years later, Erica returns to serve the Navajo people as a medical doctor in an underserved clinic, performing emergency procedures and delivering babies. When a medicine man offers to thank her with a ceremony, more miracles unfold.”

Endorsements of the book:

“Dr. Erica Elliott’s account of her life among the Navajo people is a story of high adventure that surpasses the wildest fiction. Elliott’s willingness to transcend her cultural conditioning and enter another complex society is an act of great courage—one that reveals her boundless empathy and compassion. This book is sorely needed at this moment in America, when divisive voices incessantly warn us of the other, the foreigner, those who “are not like us.” Mystery and Medicine in the High Desert: My Life Among the Navajo People reveals how diversity and inclusiveness can enrich our own society—a lesson on which our future may depend.”

—Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters

“What a wonderful book! Elliott’s voice mesmerized me. For weeks after I read this, I thought about her time with the Navajos. Such an inspiring, life-affirming, yet tough tale, woven through with a strong drive to realize her life path. Beautifully written. Elliott is an exciting new voice.”

—Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones and Let the Whole Thundering World Come Home

“Erica Elliott writes fearlessly, with an original voice that grabbed me from the first page. Her true adventures on the Navajo Nation as a teacher, a shepherd, an emergency room doctor—and best of all, an open-hearted student immersed in a spiritually rich culture—make a great story. She leaves the reader with something to ponder: The abiding importance of reaching out to others with joy and respect. I love this book.”

—Anne Hillerman, NY Times bestselling author of the Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito mystery series

“This is a powerful and personal book about courage and compassion. Reading it, we are drawn into the web of Dr. Elliott’s extraordinary life of service and learning with the Navajo people of the American Southwest. We are fortunate for the chance to accompany her on her remarkable journey.”

—Rev. Joan Jiko Halifax, Abbot of Upaya Zen Center and author of Standing at the Edge

In the next few weeks, I will be doing readings and book signings in the Santa Fe/Taos/Albuquerque area.

I hope you find the story inspiring, engaging, and informative.

Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert—My Memoir — 70 Comments

  1. Dear Erica,
My New Mexico friend Vela gifted me your book for my 75th birthday and I just finished it. What joy it brought me to read your heart-felt words, and follow your early life’s journey. I put the book down many times to marvel at how similar we were in those years of our lives. I felt I could easily have been there in your shoes had not my experiences taken me in other directions. I also relate to your putting off its writing for so long as I published a memoir in 2017 that I’d been working with since the early eighties. I came to believe its timing was perfect, though I didn’t understand how that could be until it was finished.
I am thrilled to discover your blog, which invites your spirit of adventure into my life. Thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to our paths crossing on your California book tour!

    • Thank you so much for your comment, SuRay. It made me smile knowing that you could identify with the story. I hope you enjoy the blog posts as well. Your feedback is welcomed. Many blessings to you, Erica

  2. Dear Erica,
A few hours ago I watched your interview on Report from Santa Fe with my 94 year old mom, and we both enjoyed it so much! Your book is on my list for audio books (I’ve sent a request to Audible.com. Then I found your web site and have been reading and reading for 2 hours! Finally I’ve overcome my shyness to thank you!

Your writing style is accessible, entertaining, and educational! I’m impressed by your loyal fans and patients. I’m enjoying your stories, recipes, and words of wisdom. I’m looking forward to learning about Navajo culture and your experiences.

My own journey has led me to think outside the box in similar ways (food, nutrition, bodywork, etc.) after an illness that ended my long Tech career. I’ve toured Denver & Boulder area co-housing, thinking that would be the place, but my little town of Kingston, NM gives me a similar feeling with just 30 residents 🙂

I’m normally not this forward with strangers, certainly not on a blog, so forgive me for being presumptuous. Because of bodywork, I’m betting we know some of the same people. New Mexico is unique that way.

    All the best! Sherry

    • Dear Sherry, I’m thrilled that you reached beyond your comfort zone to contact me on this blog post. I’m so touched by your words. Thank you! I hope the blog posts give you many hours of enjoyment. With warm regards, Erica

  3. Hi dear Erica,

We met so many years ago at your home in the Commons. But some meetings are
    unforgettable.

i just finished your wonderful book. . . in two days because I couldn’t put it down.
I even put it down the second night so that I could savor the completion the following morning.
That”s a hard thing to do with a good book!

I smile as I say this because it was such an intimate, honest and candid journey that I felt I walked
with you. Indeed, what an opportunity to inspire and enrich others through your life’s experiences.

Thank you for taking me back to the time I spent in that corner of the world when I first arrived in New Mexico.

    Blessed love to you Erica,
    Bente Friend

Much love always, Erica

    • Amazing that you quoted the prayer from the Blessing Way ceremony. That prayer is in my book at the end! Maybe I’ll say it in Navajo at one of my readings. Thank you for your very generous words about my writing!! They make me blush, especially since I’ve never taken a formal writing course….just writing retreats. Many blessings, Erica

  14. I am so proud of you. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experiences with all of us. You are incredible. LOL Willa

  15. I can’t wait to read this book! Please keep us updated on your reading schedule. I would love to see you in person. And many many congratulations!

  16. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement, Erica. If my experience reading your blog about your life among the Navaho people is any indication, this book will intrigue and, more importantly, uplift all who read it. The photographs so enrich the compelling narrative. I’ll be ordering copies for friends. Many thanks for shepherding this all the way to its final form. I hope it will be the first of many books you write. Every good wish for your continued success.

    • Janet, it’s so kind of you to take the time to write your comments and good wishes. Your support is much appreciated. Yes, there will be several more books on the way, eventually. With love, Erica

    • Thank you so much, John. You played a big role in coaching me, which I acknowledged in the book. I sure appreciate your comment. It means a lot to me. Love, Erica

  17. Such good news. I have been a follower of your blog for years now. While I was unable to become your patient because of your full client list, I have nonetheless learned so from what you write. You are an inspiration to those of us who have become disenchanted with modern medicine. Bless You and good luck with the book.

    • It makes me happy knowing that my blog posts have been helpful for you, Mary Ellen. Thanks for taking the time to comment. With warm regards, Erica

  18. OH Dear Erica,
So very happy to hear from you…I was wondering how you were doing and YAY you wrote a
    book…!!!
Congrats to you…and, of course, I love the picture on the book!
    Love, Maggie

  19. Grateful you have shared an important part of your life story. Proud of you, Erica! I just ordered a copy of your book.

    • I’m so excited that you’ll be reading the book, Beth. I’d love your feedback. I hope I get to see you again one of these day. Much love, Erica

  20. Have missed your blog and wondered about the pause. How fulfilling to know that you have been gestating your love of life and now birthing it to the world. Will wait to buy my copy from you when you come to Taos. Two sites here: OP Cit and SOMOS (Society of the Muse). SOMOS is the place! Deservedly great blurbs. Can hardly wait.

    • I’m always moved by your enthusiastic support of my work, Bob. Sometime in mid April I’ll be contacting bookstores about doing readings. I have no experience in marketing and setting up these kinds of events, but it looks like I’ll be learning soon. If you have any contacts at those bookstores, do let me know. With gratitude, Erica

  21. I was just thinking about what book to read next when I came across this on FB. What a labor of love – both about your life, experiences and the communities, but also for us, that you share this with us. Thank you. I will start reading tonight. I am very grateful that it is in ebook form as well!

    • Thank you so much, Jackie. I would love to hear your impressions if you get a chance to read the book. I so appreciate your comments. Love, Erica

        • HI Erica, I really enjoyed reading it on ebook/NOOK (my version). The only technical drawback was that the captions for the photos were often on the next page, rather than with the photo. This happens commonly, at least on my NOOK books, not sure how it is on Kindle. And, overall, I loved reading the book. I couldn’t put it down. Even though I had read most of it in blog form, it was nourishing and filling to have the sense of flow and time sequencing from one chapter to the next so easily and seamlessly. My interest was continually sustained and your voice brought back to life the rich times I have spent on the reservation and in that land. I look forward to your future books. with gratitude and love, Susi

          • Dear Susi, thank you for taking the time to give me feedback on the book. I’m so glad that you enjoyed it. I always appreciate hearing from you. With love, Erica

    • Hi Dee, you could come by my office sometime and I could give them to you then. Or you could come to a reading and book signing at my community on Saturday, April 27th at 7 pm. My PR people haven’t made up the schedule yet for the local bookstore readings. Love, E
