Africa Bound

You may have heard that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell in love in a safari camp in Botswana and are now married.

I am heading off to Botswana to fall in love also—but not with a prince. I expect that I’ll be falling in love with the wildlife. The relationships will be at a distance and purely platonic.

Why Africa?

For years I have been receiving digital flyers from a woman called Deborah Stephens who leads customized trips that are designed specifically for small groups of people. She offers trips to various enchanting places where she has lived throughout her life. One of those enchanting places is Botswana where she stayed after falling in love with an English doctor that she met when one of her friends became ill while traveling with her.

Check out her enticing website. https://www.timelessbaja.com

When I received her flyer one year ago about her upcoming camping safari trip to Botswana, I signed up immediately. I told some of my friends and they signed up right away as well. The friends told their friends and within days the trip had nearly filled—a year ahead of time.

Many of the photos in this post are from her collection.

The Republic of Botswana

Some of you might have already been introduced to Botswana through Alexander McCall Smith’s charming and thoroughly engaging series of novels called “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.” The main character is Mma Ramotswe whose detective agency solves specific mysteries in each novel. The strength of the novels lies in the characters, the wisdom of Mma Ramotswe, and the glimpses into the country and its culture.

The name Botswana means “land of the Tswana,” referring to the dominant ethnic group in the country, the Tswana. Botswana is located in the southern part of Africa, bounded by Namibia to the west, South Africa to the south, Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) to the east, and Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) and Angola to the north.

With just over two million people in a country roughly the size of Texas, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Since it gained independence, Botswana has transformed itself from being one of the poorest countries in the world—with a GDP per capita of about US$70 per year in the late 1960s—to one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Mining, cattle, and tourism are the main sources of revenue.

Before Botswana became independent in 1966, it was a British protectorate, known as Bechuanaland. Since then Botswana has successfully maintained a stable democracy.

To get a taste of the history that preceded independence in Botswana, on Deborah’s recommendation I watched a fascinating and touching British film called “A United Kingdom,” released in 2016.

The film is based on a true story about the heir to the throne of Bechuanaland, Seretse Khama, who studied law in London after World War II. During his studies, he fell in love with a white woman, Ruth Williams, whom he married, in spite of the threatening protests by his family, as well as the British government. Together the two of them, side by side, transformed their country.

Even if you have no intention of going to Botswana, I think you will find this inspiring film well worth watching.

Itinerary

Our mobile safari will begin in the northern part of Botswana, in a town called Maun where Deborah used to live. We will spend a few days in the Okavango Delta, then continue on to Moremi, Chobe, and Savuti’s vast game reserves.

Deborah said that this area is “…one of the best places in the world to experience animals in their own habitat, up close and personal.” She described our customized trip as “…Hemingway-style—without the guns.”

We end our safari at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We’ll be staying at an historic colonial inn right above the falls. From there, most of the group will continue on to Cape Town, South Africa for a week.

I hope you will come with me—virtually—on this exciting adventure.

  6. Dear Erica,
Bon Voyage! Looking forward to hearing about your trip!
You have brought back memories for me, already! I briefly worked in Africa for a State Dept subcontractor in my early career.
During apartheid, slipped into South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and the North, Tunis, intermittently, on special assignments.
Time to go back and retrace some adventures and to have time to expand my familiarity with Kenya, Victoria Falls, and more. Thinking Safari (photo, of course) or just friends excursion, as you are doing so beautifully.
Take Vitamin C with you. I took it three or four times a day and never got sick.
Warmest Good Wishes for a Spectacular and Memorable African Visit!
    Victoria

    • Hi Axel, I leave in a week and will be back July 5th. I bet that you and Heidi would love a trip like this. It is a low budget, personalized trip, with a small intimate group of people. I’m very excited!! Love, E

    • I leave in a week. I remember well that fabulous trip you took to Africa. That’s part of the reason I wanted to go after hearing you talk about your experience. The safari I’ll be on is very low budget and not like most commercial trips. Since it’s a small group of friends, it will be personalized and more intimate. Love, E

      • How exciting, Erica! I look forward to hearing and seeing about your adventure! I am very grateful finding out about this particular contact of yours with a non commercialized low budget experience. I have been interested in a small safari trip for several years now . . .so I will be “watching” with very curious eyes. Have a totally awesomely wonderful time . . .and thank you for sharing yourself with us!! Love, Rebekkah

  14. Hi Erica
How exciting, have a wonderful journey and new experience. I am planning a trip to Namibia for next year, been on Safari in Kenya several times!! Can‘t wait to read about your travels, enjoy!

  15. Just the other day I thought, “I wonder if Erica will be going on any adventures this summer?” Wow! Looks like a fun one! Can’t wait to hear all about it. (Can you find out if the guy getting chased by a hippo is ok? Worried about him…)

    • What a big heart you have to be worried about the guy getting chased by the hippo! I will ask Deborah Stephens if he survived the chase intact. I almost didn’t post that picture because I was afraid that it might trigger PTSD symptoms in a few of my patients. They get scared when I say that I’m going on a trip and ask me to avoid all danger—or to stop traveling and take up quilting.

  16. Having been to all the countries you are visiting and loving Africa better than any other country where I have traveled, I am sooo happy for you. the Safari life is so full of joy and excitement. the animals in their natural habitat are beyond description – we saw a Lion kill – forget what he killed, if we knew. The tents are wonderful and it is particularly thrilling when you know the animals are outside your screens from sounds and sometimes sight.

You will want to go back as I always have. I’ll dig out my pictures and journal and we can have fun comparing. It has been twenty years since I was there, sleeping with the windows open in the Inn, with the monkeys swinging from the trees.

    Safari Njema!

    • I can’t wait!! I’m super excited. You certainly have led an adventuresome life, Anna!! There is so much for you to write about. Safari Njema! Erica

    • Thank you, dear Joan—and Tico. I hope you’re having a fabulous time in Brazil with John of God. Can’t wait to hear about it. Love, E

  17. Dearest Erica,
We’ll be with you in spirit every step of the way! In Deborah’s map above, Botswana looks a heart in the middle of Southern Africa… and that’s where we know you’ll be. I will send you an introduction to a dear friend (whom I’ve never met in person, but whose gender work the Vaal we’ve researched with great admiration)…hoping you’ll have a chance to meet while you’re in Cape Town

    • Botswana looking like a heart in the middle of Southern Africa will not be surprising to you after you watch the movie “A United Kingdom.” Botswana is already my favorite country in Africa—even though I’ve never been to Africa!! Thank you for thinking about introducing me to your dear friend in Cape Town. And thank you for coming with me in spirit on this trip. With much love to my soul sister, Erica

    • We are leaving in a few days. I suggest you sign up for next year and bring your friends with you!! xxox e

    • Je n’avais aucune idée que tu as grandi en Afrique francophone. Ce serait génial si tu écrivais à propos de ces temps, Simone. Cela rendrait probablement la lecture fascinante! Je t’embrasse, Erica

  18. May you fall swiftly in love and remain so forever! And may the magic of Africa display itself for you as I know you will treasure this with awe.

  19. Erica
I’m so happy for you! I’ve always wanted to go there but was concerned about all the vaccines necessary to go into Africa
what did you choose to do about vaccines
so that maybe I am able to go
    thank you
have the most wonderful trip of your life
I look forward to seeing all the photos and hearing your adventures
    Love Nancy aka Morgan

    • Nancy, I’m not getting vaccinated. I will simply take the usual precautions with the water and food. In most countries the vaccines are only recommended, not mandatory. Instead of the malarial medications, I will be taking Artemisinin, a form of Artemissina annua (Wormwood), an ancient remedy used for malaria. Artemissinin is starting to be used again in China in areas where the malaria has become drug-resistant. I also recommend it for some of my patients with Lyme Disease. I will also be using my homemade insect repellent with eucalyptus, peppermint oil, citronella, and geranium essential oils in a base of jojoba oil. To protect against the pesticide spraying on the return flight from Africa, I am bringing a mask and something to put over myself while the spraying takes place. For the people like us with sensitivities to toxic chemicals, travel can be challenging. Love, Erica

  20. I will look forward to your first rate reporting and photos.Have a safe, marvelous adventure !
    Dorothy

    • I hope I can get some good photos—even though I only have my iPhone for a camera. Thanks for your good wishes, E

I have some horrible malady after reading this post.
I’m green all over and very upset.
